Lawn Care During Drought Conditions

Summer is here and that means that many parts of Kentucky are currently experiencing a drought.  Drought conditions can have a detrimental effect on lawns, however, several things can be done in the short term to help your lawn withstand the drought.

Raising the height on the mower to avoid mowing the grass too short is a good first step in reducing stress on your drought-stricken lawn.  During periods of drought, it is best to return your grass clippings to the lawn instead of bagging them.  Grass clippings contain vital nutrients that will help feed your lawn during times of stress.  If you choose to water your lawn do so during the coolest period of the day to reduce water loss through evaporation.  If possible, reduce traffic on the lawn during periods of drought.   Machinery and extra foot traffic add extra stress to your lawn during dry conditions.  Avoid applying any unnecessary chemicals such as weed killers as they can scorch the grass, adding to the damage of an already stressed lawn.

A lawn that is in healthy condition will withstand drought conditions better than a neglected lawn, so it is best to protect and maintain your lawn all year long.  The professionals at Lancaster Lawn & Landscaping, LLC can help you maintain a healthy lawn all year.  Give us a call for more information.
