Fall Mums.
Fall seems to be the perfect season to brighten your landscape and perk up your front porch decorations! September is a good month to landscape with fall mums, which are available in a rainbow assortment of colors and available at almost every retail store and market. Cooler weather helps plants acclimate to their new surroundings easier than during the heat of summer, and it also means less watering.
When it comes to planting mums you need to choose a sunny, well drained spot in your landscape. Dig and loosen the soil to a depth of eight to ten inches in a hole twice the diameter of the plant’s pot. The best time to plant them is when the temperature starts to cool off in the evening. Mums have the best chance of surviving winter when planted in September. If we have a mild winter, or you live in a mild location, chances are better that they will survive
If you are just wanting to add pops of fall color to your front porch or fall display garden mums make fantastic container plants. You can easily swap them out with some of those summer annuals, putting them into pots or window boxes. These autumn must-haves are easy on the wallet too, so even if you don’t plan to add them to your permanent landscape they can be used as annuals for the fall season.
It seems everywhere you go this time of year, there are mums for sale. They are the perfect addition to any autumn display and come in a variety of colors. The are guaranteed to brighten up your landscape or your front porch.
