Fall Lawn Care Tips
Labor Day weekend is the perfect time to start planning your fall lawn care as it is often called the “unofficial end of summer.” However, summer is not over yet, especially in Brandenburg, Kentucky, and surrounding counties where we still have temperatures reaching the 90-degree mark. Fall is the ideal time of year to prepare your lawn for spring. The cooler temperatures and occasional rainfall make this the best time to give your property the care it needs to be healthy and green once spring comes back around. The professionals at Lancaster Lawn & Landscaping, LLC have compiled a list of fall lawn care maintenance that will keep your yard looking its best through the fall and winter months.
Grass continues to grow until it frosts over in the winter so do not put away your mower just yet. Continue cutting your grass and keeping it at an ideal height. Cutting your grass too short can reduce your grass’s root system and prevent your lawn’s ability to endure the winter cold.
More rain, more dew, and less evaporation in autumn provide natural moisture for the grass. However, this might not be enough, especially if you have had a dry summer. To keep the grassroots well hydrated and healthy going into the winter months your lawn should receive at least one inch of water per week in the fall for optimized growth and health.
It’s probably too warm in early September for a lot of leaves to be falling from your trees, but if you do have any fallen leaves, you need to rake them up. Raking leaves as soon as they fall will make the cleanup less time consuming and will help prevent fungi growth.
Over the summer (especially a hot and dry one), your lawn has probably suffered from heat stress. Aerating in the fall can help your lawn be green and healthy for the next year. Aeration removes soil plugs from your yard so that nutrients, water and oxygen can reach the grassroots.
Fall is the best time to overseed your lawn because the ground is still warm, there is plenty of moisture, the nights are cooler, and the sun is not as hot during the day. Overseeding fills in thin spots and bare patches in your yard.
Applying fertilizer in the fall will give your yard the nutrients it needs to get through the winter and grow stronger and healthier in spring.
