Do You Want To Carve A Pumpkin?
There are numerous traditions that come with the fall, with Halloween being the first holiday of the season. Halloween is such a fun holiday for children and families to enjoy from trick or treating, haunted houses, hayrides and one of our favorite Halloween traditions which is carving pumpkins.
Before you carve into your pumpkin you should wipe it down with a diluted bleach solution. This will prevent your pumpkin from rotting so quickly and putting your hard work to waste. You will want to use a table cover so the pumpkin “guts” can be easily cleaned and leave less of a mess.
One common mistake made by many pumpkin carvers is a lack of planning. Rather than simply cutting into the pumpkin, and creating a face as you go, draw your design on the pumpkin beforehand. Avoid wasting pumpkins or being disappointed with the result and take a little extra time to plan your design. You can purchase pumpkin carving design kits, which include tools specifically designed for carving pumpkins, at most shopping centers which can make the process even easier.
Consider cutting the pumpkin open from the bottom which will keep the stem intact and allows for the already settled seeds and goop to come out much easier than having to dig it out from the top. Because your pumpkin has likely been sitting upright for some time, the guts and seeds will be settled at the bottom. Bonus Tip: If you put the seeds and guts into a bowl of cold water, the seeds will rise to the top and are not only edible but can be very tasty in many recipes.
The walls of a pumpkin are going to be relatively thick in larger pumpkins. Consider thinning the walls of the pumpkin by shaving off some of the inside wall in the part of the pumpkin that you will be carving. This will make the carving process much easier.
In the true spirit of Halloween, you should light your pumpkin. You can use tea lights, candles or you can even use Christmas lights and place them inside your pumpkin.
